Gerundino Fernandez 1990 Flamenco Guitar – Rare Andalusian Masterpiece with Cedar Warmth and Explosive Flamenco Bite
The Gerundino Fernandez 1990 Flamenco Guitar is an exceptional example of Spanish lutherie, crafted by one of the most legendary makers of the 20th century. Gerundino Fernández (1931–2006), based in Almería, is considered among the greatest flamenco guitar builders of his era, alongside Arcángel Fernández, Francisco Barba, and Manuel Reyes. His guitars were played by Paco Peña, Paco del Gastor, Tomatito, Juan Martín, and even Eric Clapton—cementing his reputation among both flamenco professionals and collectors worldwide. Known for their immediacy, raspy growl, and unmistakably Andalusian voice, Gerundino’s instruments are treasured for their authenticity and power.
This 1990 model features a cedar soundboard paired with traditional cypress back and sides, producing a flamenco tone that is both warm and fiery. The scale length is 650 mm with a nut width of 52 mm, offering comfortable dimensions for professional flamenco technique. The action is perfectly set at 2.7 mm on the bass side and 2.2 mm on the treble side at the 12th fret, ensuring fast, effortless playability with excellent responsiveness.
Sonically, the Gerundino Fernandez 1990 Flamenco Guitar is breathtaking. The basses are dry, punchy, and percussive, giving precise rhythmic clarity, while the trebles sing with lyrical sweetness and projection. The cedar top adds depth and warmth to the midrange, providing a rich tonal body that blends perfectly with the crystalline highs and woody flamenco bite. Dynamic and responsive, it whispers with intimacy in soft passages and roars with authority when pushed, making it equally suited for delicate falsetas and fiery rasgueados.
The guitar is in good and original condition with quite some amount of wear from play and use, but without cracks or damages. A protective hard case is included.
For the serious flamenco player or discerning collector, the Gerundino Fernandez 1990 Flamenco Guitar offers the perfect combination of Andalusian tradition, expressive warmth, and explosive flamenco energy.
