Description
Conde Hermanos 1970 Negra Flamenco Guitar – a masterpiece in the tradition of Domingo Esteso guitars, with the sound of Paco de Lucia’s Negra!
The Conde Hermanos are not merely guitar makers; they have shaped the history of flamenco music like no other. The three brothers, Faustino, Julio, and Mariano, initially crafted guitars for the great master Domingo Esteso, who guided and trained them in their formative years.
Following Esteso’s passing, the brothers gradually began to create guitars in their unique style. Initially branded as Sobrinos de Domingo Esteso, they faced challenges in the 1960s, a time when selling flamenco guitars was difficult. However, when the renowned Paco de Lucia discovered Conde at the turn of the 70s—transitioning from his previous preference for Ramirez guitars—they had developed a distinctive guitar character. Their instruments featured remarkably robust basses and resonant trebles, embodying the brilliance of flamenco guitars.
Paco de Lucia’s loyalty to Conde guitars elevated their status, inspiring countless imitators due to his immense popularity. Old TV footage from the 70s rarely shows a guitarist without a Conde, highlighting their widespread influence. Faustino Conde, responsible for the construction of these iconic guitars, left a lasting legacy in flamenco history.
This particular Conde Hermanos 1970 Negra Flamenco Guitar is exceptional, crafted in the Domingo Esteso style at the workshop on Calle Pozuelo de Alarcon. As was customary for this Conde workshop, the label lacks a date, but it is traceable to the early 70s.
The guitar boasts a fine spruce top with pear wood back and sides—a revered tonewood used by leading makers like Ramirez and Conde for their “negra” guitars, alongside rosewood. It features a 650 mm scale length and a 52 mm nut width. The action is comfortably low at 2.8 mm E and 2.2 mm e at the 12th fret. The neck is straight and the saddle of the bridge still has room to go lower in the future.
The Conde Hermanos 1970 Negra Flamenco Guitar delivers a breathtakingly vibrant sound, reminiscent of recordings by the flamenco greats and Paco de Lucia’s videos. Its power and dynamic sound fulfill every expectation, with deep basses and clear, precise trebles. Both players and listeners will delight in its charming vintage tonal quality.
This guitar is expertly set up with ideal playability and a straight neck. It remains in greatcondition, with only a minor repair on the top, preserving its originality and fantastic state for its age.
Accompanied by the original case, this Conde Hermanos 1970 Negra Flamenco Guitar is a treasure for any serious musician or collector.
