Gibson J-160E 1955 Acoustic Guitar – Rare Early Model Delivering the Authentic Beatles Tone and Timeless Style

The Gibson J-160E 1955 Acoustic Guitar is one of the most iconic electro-acoustic guitars of the 20th century, combining Gibson’s classic flattop design with groundbreaking electric features. Introduced in 1954 as Gibson’s first attempt at an electro-acoustic model—originally conceived as the “Les Paul Flattop”—it quickly became legendary, not least because The Beatles used several J-160E guitars for their early recordings and performances. Its unmistakable tone and unique design cemented its place in music history.

Built with a solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and a 15-fret neck, the J-160E was equipped with Gibson’s revolutionary P-90 pickup mounted at the end of the fingerboard. Together with the fixeex bone bridge (not the later ADJ bridge), this made it a trailblazer among Gibson’s flattops. While the ladder bracing construction reduces some of the acoustic projection compared to traditional X-braced models, the amplified tone is where the guitar shines: warm, rounded, and instantly recognizable as the classic P-90 sound heard on so many Beatles tracks.

Acoustically, the guitar has a charming, more limited voice—perfect for intimate sessions—but once plugged in, it transforms into a true studio workhorse with a distinctive electric-acoustic character. The 24.75″ scale and comfortable C-shaped mahogany neck make it easy to play. It is setup perfectly, with a low action and a straight neck.

This Gibson J-160E 1955 Acoustic Guitar remains in excellent condition, showcasing the characterful playwear, finish checking, and patina expected from a 70-year-old instrument. It has received a professional refret and a neck reset, ensuring top playability for decades to come. On the back it has 3 tiny repairs, which have been done over the years. All componets of this guitar are original and it comes with an modern case.

For collectors and players alike, the Gibson J-160E 1955 Acoustic Guitar is not just an instrument but a piece of history. Its unique tonal personality, vintage charm, and strong Beatles legacy make it one of the most desirable vintage Gibson models on the market today.
