Marcelo Barbero 1935 Flamenco Guitar – a historic masterpiece of Spanish guitar making
This Marcelo Barbero 1935 Flamenco Guitar is an exceptionally rare treasure – a genuine piece of guitar history crafted by one of Spain’s most celebrated luthiers. Marcelo Barbero (1904–1956) began his career humbly in the Madrid workshop of José Ramírez I, later continuing under José Ramírez II after the elder Ramírez passed away in 1923. Deeply influenced by Santos Hernández, Barbero not only completed many of Santos’ unfinished instruments after his death in 1943, but also carried forward his legacy. Today, Marcelo Barbero is regarded as one of the greatest guitar makers of the 20th century, with his instruments among the most sought-after and esteemed in the world.
This Marcelo Barbero 1935 Flamenco Guitar features a beautifully aged spruce soundboard combined with fine rosewood back and sides. With a 648 mm scale length and a nut width of 51 mm, it offers the perfect dimensions for traditional flamenco playing.
The guitar is in very good condition for its age. It has been professionally restored and one small crack on the back has been repaired. The finish has been refreshed. Its neck is perfectly straight, the setup is comfortable (2.7 mm E and 2.2 mm e at the 12th fret), and the playability is outstanding – light and effortless under the fingers. When first picked up, its remarkable lightness immediately stands out. Strummed for the first time, the guitar instantly reveals the unmistakable craftsmanship of a master luthier.
Tonally, the Marcelo Barbero 1935 Flamenco Guitar embodies everything one expects from a vintage flamenco instrument of this caliber: a lively, expressive voice, rich in overtones yet deeply rooted in a powerful fundamental tone. The basses are strong and resonant, while the trebles sing with remarkable clarity and character. The guitar offers both sweetness and fire, with an unmistakable vintage aura and impressive sustain. It is an instrument that feels alive in the hands – full of soul, personality, and dynamics.
Overall, this Marcelo Barbero 1935 Flamenco Guitar is far more than an instrument – it is a rare and charming work of art that captures the essence of Barbero’s genius.
