Description
Manuel de Soto y Solares 1900 classical guitar – This exceedingly rare and collectible guitar by Manuel de Soto y Solares, crafted around 1900 in Sevilla, stands as a remarkable guitar. It is very similar to the guitars of Antonio de Torres … from the headstock to the measurements and construction details, the similarities are striking.
Manuel de Soto y Solares (1839-1906), born into a lineage of guitar makers in Sevilla, was the son of Manuel de Soto Castañón (b.c. 1818-1878). Starting his craft around 1860, his workshop was located near that of Antonio de Torres. According to Romanillos, Soto y Solares and Torres engaged in business together. It was common practice among makers to exchange or trade woods, parts, and occasionally subcontract or purchase guitars to sell under their own labels. During the challenging years between 1865 and 1870, Torres, like many of his contemporaries, produced lower-priced guitars to sustain himself. This raises the fascinating possibility that some guitars attributed to Manuel de Soto y Solares could have been crafted by Torres during his time in Sevilla.
What is certain is that Manuel de Soto y Solares wholeheartedly embraced Torres’s construction style. When Torres took a hiatus and moved to Almeria in 1870, guitarists seeking the Torres style turned to Soto y Solares, including notable clients like Juan Breva (1844-1918), known to have used a guitar from him between 1870 and 1890. The craftsmanship evident in Manuel de Soto y Solares’ guitars reveals his exceptional skill as an artisan.
