Description

Franz Novy 1920 Terz Classical Guitar – Viennese Masterpiece in the Tradition of Johann Georg Stauffer

The Franz Novy 1920 Terz Classical Guitar is a rare and beautifully crafted example from one of Vienna’s leading guitar and zither makers of the early 20th century. Franz Novy, active in the first half of the century, worked in the tradition of Johann Georg Stauffer, creating finely built guitars with elegant details and exceptional tonal character. Though primarily known for guitars and zithers, Novy’s instruments earned recognition far beyond Vienna – most notably, one of his zithers was played by Anton Karas in the legendary film The Third Man.

This Terz guitar, designed to be tuned a minor third higher than a standard classical guitar, offers a unique tonal palette and historical charm. Built with a spruce top and maple back and sides, it delivers a bright, clear, and articulate voice with excellent projection. The smaller 570 mm scale length and 43 mm nut width make it highly comfortable to play, especially for players with smaller hands or for those seeking a more intimate instrument for salon music.

The guitar is richly decorated with tasteful inlay work and fine purflings, demonstrating Novy’s dedication to craftsmanship and aesthetics. An especially notable feature is the adjustable neck in Stauffer style, allowing for easy setup and playability adjustments – a technical hallmark of Viennese luthiery from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Tonally, the Franz Novy 1920 Terz Classical Guitar is wonderfully expressive. The spruce and maple construction creates a lively, shimmering treble response paired with sweet mids and a well-defined bass. Its voice is perfectly suited for classical repertoire, Viennese salon music, and chamber contexts. The higher Terz tuning adds brilliance and clarity, making it an inspiring instrument for solo or ensemble playing.

This guitar is more than just a fine instrument – it is a testament to Vienna’s rich guitar-making tradition. With its combination of historic craftsmanship, elegant design, and unique tonal qualities, the Franz Novy 1920 Terz Classical Guitar is a rare opportunity for collectors and performers alike.
