David Rubio 1973 classical guitar – remarkable concert guitar with outstanding sound – Similar to Julian Bream’s guitar

David “José” Rubio stands out as one of the most renowned English guitar makers. After relocating to Sevilla and later Madrid to study flamenco guitar, he developed a profound passion for luthiery. In 1963, he established his first workshop in New York, USA. Shortly after, he met Julian Bream, marking the beginning of a lasting friendship. Bream played several of Rubio’s guitars, including one very similar to this instrument: a 1966 model featured on his album “Julian Bream and his Friends” (1968). In 1967, D. J. Rubio returned to England, where he lived in Julian Bream’s home in Semley until 1969, when he opened a workshop near Oxford. His work extended beyond guitars to include lutes (played by Bream), vihuelas, theorboes, harpsichords, violas da gamba, baroque guitars, and more. He later moved his workshop to Cambridge in the 1980s.

This remarkable David Rubio 1973 classical guitar, crafted by the esteemed Paul Fischer, represents exceptional artistry within the English guitar-making tradition. Inside, it bears the “PF” stamp, signifying Fischer’s craftsmanship, renowned for both his skill and innovative approaches, including the creation of his “taut” model. This particular instrument is a stunning homage to Rubio’s style, masterfully designed to reflect the classic elements of Rubio’s work. It features the iconic rosette, head shape, and plantilla that define Rubio’s designs, while also incorporating Fischer’s unique touch.

The materials chosen for this David Rubio 1973 classical guitar are truly exquisite. The back and sides are constructed from CITES-certified Brazilian rosewood, famed for its beautiful appearance and rich tonal qualities, sourced from Rubio’s well-known stock. This wood selection significantly enhances the guitar’s tonal depth, producing a full and resonant sound with remarkable sustain, especially in the higher registers. The guitar’s volume is well-balanced, powerful without being overpowering, making it perfect for various performance contexts, from intimate recitals to larger concert halls. The guitar is in very good condition, having been well cared for, with 2 professionally repaired cracks on the soundboard and a revised fretboard with new frets. All work was carried out by the renowned luthier Gert Esmyol from Munich.
