A cool 1949 Martin 00-18 just came in ... when we tuned and played it for the first time, we were blown away by its gigantic and open sound. It sounds like one of those pre-war Martin guitars!
In this period just after the war, Martin created wonderful guitars - which are highly sought after today. It was an era when guitars were built without any commercial consideration... they were built thin using the finest tonewoods. Completely hand built in every respect. Beautiful mahogany sides and back and a very nice spruce top - makes this guitar a cannon. The guitars from this period are of the finest Martin has produced in all these years... and that says something about the quality they have produced over the last 100+ years.
This Martin 00-18 1949 is an old workhorse. It has a few cracks on the frame that have been stably repaired over the years. The neck has been reset and the guitar plays well. All in all it is in good vintage condition.
Most importantly, it's one of the most distinctive, mature mahogany guitars we've ever owned - simply incredible. Rich and deep ... very dynamic and powerful sound. The whole construction and the mature woods create this haunting sound that can't be described with any degree of accuracy.
This is one of them: playing it means wanting to own it!
