Manuel Reyes 1955 Flamenco Guitar - An early masterpiece by Spain's most important flamenco guitar maker

The Manuel Reyes 1955 flamenco guitar is an exceptional rarity and an impressive testimony to the early creative phase of one of the greatest flamenco guitar makers of all time. Manuel Reyes (1934-2014) is still regarded today as the absolute reference in flamenco guitar making. His name stands for uncompromising quality, unmistakable sound and a perfection of craftsmanship that few have achieved. His importance is so great that a separate chapter has been dedicated to him in specialist literature, including Guitarreros de Andalucía.

Throughout his life, Manuel Reyes only built a very small number of guitars, around 20 instruments per year. He stopped accepting new orders more than twenty years before his death, as demand far exceeded his capacity. Early guitars from the 1950s are therefore extremely rare and are among the most sought-after instruments in the flamenco world today.

This Manuel Reyes 1955 flamenco guitar embodies everything that has established the legendary reputation of this guitar maker. In terms of sound, it is uncompromisingly flamenco-typical: a blazingly fast response, explosive projection and a pronounced percussiveness that is particularly impressive in rasgueados. At the same time, it has a surprisingly lyrical, soft side when played quietly and with distinction. The trebles are clear and sustaining, while the bass develops a deep, throaty growl that responds excellently to dynamic playing.

The guitar plays effortlessly and directly. The low string action and the straight neck provide exactly the lightness and speed that flamenco players expect. The scale length is 657 mm, the nut width 51 mm. The top is made of fine Alpine spruce, the back and sides of classic cypress - a traditional wood combination that supports the typical, dry and assertive flamenco sound. The string action is flamenco low at 2.7 mm E and 2.2 mm e at the 12th fret.

In the 1990s, the guitar was professionally refinished by Manuel Reyes. The machine heads were replaced with well-functioning, high-quality newer machine heads. The instrument comes from a collection and is in exceptionally good vintage condition for its age. It has no cracks and no structural repairs.

This Manuel Reyes 1955 flamenco guitar is not only an outstanding playing instrument, but also an important piece of Spanish guitar making history. Guitars from this early phase by Reyes are extremely rare on the market - especially in such good condition. An instrument of great historical, musical and collector's value.

The guitar is supplied in a good hard case.
