Manuel de Soto y Solares 1900 Classical Guitar - This extremely rare and collectible guitar by Manuel de Soto y Solares, which was made in Seville around 1900, is an all-round remarkable guitar. It is very similar to the guitars of Antonio de Torres ... From the headstock design to the dimensions to the construction details, the similarities are striking.

Manuel de Soto y Solares (1839-1906), born into a family of guitar makers in Seville, was the son of Manuel de Soto Castañón (born 1818-1878). He opened his workshop around 1860 and it was located near that of Antonio de Torres. According to Romanillos, Soto y Solares and Torres did business together. It was common among guitar makers to trade woods and parts and occasionally give guitars to other luthiers or take them from them to sell under their own labels. In the difficult years between 1865 and 1870, Torres, like many of his contemporaries, produced cheaper guitars to stay afloat. This raises the intriguing possibility that some guitars attributed to Manuel de Soto y Solares may have been made by Torres during his time in Seville.

What is certain is that Manuel de Soto y Solares wholeheartedly embraced Torres' style. When Torres took a break in 1870 and moved to Almería, guitarists looking for the Torres style turned to Soto y Solares, including well-known customers such as Juan Breva (1844-1918), who is known to have played a Soto y Solares guitar between 1870 and 1890. The craftsmanship reflected in Manuel de Soto y Solares' guitars demonstrates his exceptional skill as a craftsman.

This beautiful Manuel de Soto y Solares 1900 classical guitar has a spruce top and cypress back/sides, with a nut width of 52 mm and a scale length of 650 mm. Although it is undated, it is believed to have been made around 1900. Well restored, it is eminently playable and offers a low action of 3.4 mm on the E string and 2.8 mm on the E string at the 12th fret.

The sound and projection of this Manuel de Soto y Solares 1900 classical guitar are outstanding, with clearly defined tones and impressive volume. The aged woods give it vintage warmth and dynamics and allow the timbres to shine. The combination of cypress and spruce gives the sound an enchanting quality and transports the player to another time.

This Manuel de Soto y Solares 1900 Classical Guitar is truly exceptional for authentically recreating the music of the great old composers. It is also an excellent guitar to get close to the original Torres sound without having to spend hundreds of thousands.
