Leon Victor Mougenot 1900 Romantic guitar - outstanding guitar with a fine sound and fantastic ornamentation!
Leon Mougenot first learned instrument making from Emile Laurent and then apprenticed with his paternal cousin, Georges, in Brussels from 1887 to 1894. Mougenot returned to France, worked in Lyon and Paris and later for the London company W.E. Hill & Sons.
In 1899, he finally returned to his home town of Mirecourt, where he set up his own business. He won the gold medal at the international exhibition in Nancy in 1909.
Throughout his career, he trained more than 75 apprentices or employees, including: BISH Paul, BISIACH Carlo and Leandro, CROLET Paul-DUPUY Philippe, ENEL Charles, ENEL Pierre, JACQUEMIN René, JOMBAR Louis and Jean-Paul, MILLANT Max, RAGOT Lucien, SCHMITT Lucien, (1910-1912), STRIEBIG Jean, VATELOT Marcel, VILLAUME Gustave.
This Leon Victor Mougenot 1900 Romantic guitar is particularly notable for its ornate inlays, fine construction and beautiful materials. Even the fingerboard is inlaid all over with mother-of-pearl, making this beautiful instrument a work of art and very decorative. The woods are first class and the construction of this guitar is of the highest standard. One can really only speak in superlatives about this guitar.
The scale length is 630 mm and the nut width is 46 mm. It has a spruce top and rosewood back and sides.
This Leon Victor Mougenot 1900 Romantic guitar is a true master guitar that was certainly built for a guitarist for professional use at the time.
It has a strong and authoritative tone with an exceptional balance between the singing highs and the deep basses. Huge dynamic range and simply perfect playability.
The tone is dense yet clear and has an essential warm, mysterious and atmospheric quality. The sound comes with controlled and balanced layers of overtones resting on the crystal clear fundamental.
The guitar is in very good condition and has been expertly restored by Paul Janssen. It can be dated to around 1900. It plays very easily with a straight neck and low action.
