Jacques-Pierre Thibout ~1820 - a very beautiful romantic guitar by one of the most important Parisian instrument makers of the early 19th century.
Jacques-Pierre Thibout was born in Caen in 1777. He first worked in Caen, then in 1796 under Koliker in Paris. He married in 1800 and settled at 24 rue Montmartre in 1807, then moved to 8 rue Rameau in 1810. He was a remarkable instrument maker and his instruments are very popular. His violins and guitars soon became famous, as Thibout's improvements and innovations gave his instruments an excellent sound quality.
Thibout was awarded a silver medal in 1827 and another silver medal in 1844. At the Paris Exhibition of 1855, he finally received the first class medal for an excellent violoncello.
Jacques-Pierre Thibout died in Saint-Mande near Paris in 1856.
The guitar sounds fantastic and can keep up with the best Lacote instruments.
It has a very charming sound that is perfect for getting closer to the authentic sound of the music of composers such as Sor, Giuliani, Aguado, Legnani, Diabelli, Carulli, Coste and Legnani, to name but a few!
It has a clear sound, rich overtones, distinctive trebles and beautiful basses. It is quite impressive that such a sonorous and fine instrument was built more than 200 years ago.
The guitar also has a very natural, “woody" sound quality, very stylish, refined and seductive. The rich, well-rehearsed sound quality is something you can only find in an instrument of this age. In the hands of the player it feels very expressive and responds to the most subtle changes in touch. The sound is absolutely magical, from the lowest to the highest registers.
The condition is very good for its age. It has been very professionally restored by Paul Janssen.
The guitar is easy to play, with a straight neck and a pleasantly low string action.
The nut width is 48 mm and the scale length is 630 mm. It has a spruce top and a male back and sides.
