Casa Gonzalez 1910 Classical Guitar - just by looking at this guitar, you already know it sounds incredible. How else can a guitar have such a beautiful vintage patina if it hasn't been loved and played a lot over the years?
This guitar was built around 1910 - no exact date is given anywhere, but the technical data suggest that it can be dated to this time.
The nineteenth-century Madrid guitar maker Francisco Gonzalez was an almost exact contemporary of Antonio de Torres, but built in his own style. Gonzalez was very famous in his day - he won several prizes and medals at various exhibitions during his lifetime and was known to have been the teacher of Jose Ramirez I and his brother Manuel Ramirez.
The reputation that Gonzalez enjoyed in his day indicates that he must have been a prolific instrument maker, but similar to Vicente Arias, very few of his instruments have survived to this day. After his death in 1879, his work was continued by his son-in-law Enrique Romans Papell. Initially under the name „Viuda e Hijos de Francisco González“ and after 1901 under the name „Casa Gonzalez“, which remained active until the 1940s.
The present Casa Gonzalez 1910 classical guitar is a beautiful example from this workshop, characterized by exquisite inlays - for example the mother-of-pearl in the middle band of the rosette. Apart from a few old and stable repairs, the instrument is in very good condition and is in its original state.
Sonically, this Casa Gonzalez 1910 Classical Guitar is nothing short of spectacular, with a huge bass that rivals any guitar model built before or since. Although the basses are huge, they are transparent right up to the upper registers and do not crowd out the brilliant, crystal-clear trebles - the guitar therefore retains an unusually perfect balance, even amidst the fullness of the bass notes.
This is in every respect a rare, historic, well-preserved and in every respect great sounding and playing guitar from one of the most important and influential Spanish workshops of the turn of the century (19th/20th century).
