Petitjean ~1810 – a very beautiful romantic guitar from one of the most important instrument makers of the early 19th century.
This beautiful guitar was made by Petitjean, one of the most famous and best guitar workshops of the time. The family had been working in the field of musical instrument making since around 1800. The workshop was most likely run by many members of the family. The guitars were labeled with various manufacturer names, such as: ‘Petitjean L’ainé à Paris’, ‘Petitjean à Paris’ and ‘Petitjean’. The innovation of the ‘Petitjean’ workshop was that the guitars were no longer built with a two-part back, but rather with a one-piece back made of solid wood. In addition, valuable precious woods were also used.
This guitar is a real masterpiece and is beautifully crafted. It has a top made of finely grained spruce. The edge of the soundboard and the soundhole are elegantly decorated. The back and sides of the guitar are made of solid pearwood. The guitar is in very good condition and plays incredibly well. It was restored extremely professionally. The scale length is 640 mm and the nut width is 45 mm. The action at the 12th fret is 3.8 mm E and 3.2 mm e.
The guitar has a very charming sound that is perfect for getting closer to the authentic sound of the music of composers such as Sor, Giuliani, Aguado, Diabelli, Carulli, Coste and Legnani, to name just a few!
It has a clear sound, rich overtones, distinctive trebles and beautiful basses. It is quite impressive that such a sonorous and delicate instrument was built more than 200 years ago.
The guitar also has a very natural, woody nuance, very stylish, refined and seductive. The rich, seasoned sound quality is something you can only find in an instrument of this age. In the hands of the player, it feels very expressive and responds to the subtlest changes in touch. The sound is absolutely magical from the lowest to the highest registers.
