Salvador Ibanez 1890 Classical Guitar – Valuable and Historically Important Spanish Guitar with Exceptional Sound
This Salvador Ibanez 1890 Classical Guitar is not only a valuable vintage instrument but also a remarkable piece of guitar-making history, adorned with elegant decorations that highlight its artistic character.
Salvador Ibáñez (1854–1920) was among Spain’s most admired luthiers, crafting a wide variety of stringed instruments renowned for their refined quality and meticulous workmanship. Beginning his apprenticeship in Valencia at just eleven years old, he opened his own workshop by 1870. Over the years, Ibáñez produced guitars, bandurrias, lutes, and even innovative double-necked instruments. His company, Salvador Ibáñez y Albiñara, later became Salvador Ibáñez e Hijos, and after his death in 1920, the brand continued under his sons until it was eventually acquired by Telesforo Julve in 1933.
Ibáñez guitars have been admired by many great musicians: Julian Bream performed on one, and Eric Clapton owned several – one of which sold for $42,000 at a charity auction.
The Salvador Ibanez 1890 Classical Guitar offers a voice shaped by more than a century of natural aging, creating a sound that is at once historic and captivating. Its tone has a mature depth that only time can produce, with woods that resonate freely and with remarkable complexity.
The basses are deep and rounded, carrying a warm presence that underpins every chord with authority while remaining articulate and clear. The midrange has a silky richness, adding warmth and subtle color, making chord progressions sound full yet transparent. The trebles are singing, bright, and lyrical, cutting through with purity and elegance without harshness. Each note blooms with clarity, yet blends seamlessly into a cohesive and balanced whole.
Dynamic range is impressive: the Salvador Ibanez 1890 classical guitar responds immediately to the player’s touch, whether delivering the gentlest pianissimo or a strong fortissimo. Softly played, it reveals a sweet, almost intimate quality; when pushed, it projects with crystalline brilliance and commanding presence. Overtones shimmer around the core note, giving the impression of a natural, built-in reverberation that enhances the expressiveness of every phrase.
This unique tonal palette makes the guitar ideal for both solo works and ensemble contexts, offering nuance, refinement, and projection that few instruments of any era can match.
The guitar is built with a spruce top and rosewood back and sides. With a scale length of 605 mm and a nut width of 50 mm, it offers excellent playability. The neck is straight, the action comfortably low, and the instrument is in absolutely fantastic condition and all original. It comes with its original wooden case.
The guitar has its original wooden tuning pegs. Upon request, we can equip it with mechanical Wittner fine-tuning pegs, which make tuning the guitar very easy and precise.
The Salvador Ibanez 1890 Classical Guitar is an elegant example of Ibáñez’s finest work – a rare opportunity for collectors and players to own a historic instrument that embodies both artistry and sound beauty.
