Description

Enrique Sanfeliu 1920 Flamenco Guitar – Rare Historical Instrument with Lyrical, Mystical and Expressive Vintage Tone

The Enrique Sanfeliu 1920 Flamenco Guitar is a rare and highly collectible instrument, representing the golden age of early 20th-century Spanish lutherie. Enrique Sanfeliu, born in Valencia in 1882, first discovered his passion for the guitar after hearing Francisco Tárrega perform in concert. Trained as both a guitarist and a maker, he studied with Manuel Loscos before moving to Barcelona, where he joined the Estruch Hermanos workshop. At the same time, he was welcomed into the atelier of Enrique García, who generously shared his knowledge despite Sanfeliu working for a competing shop. This experience left a lasting imprint on Sanfeliu’s work, and many of his guitars reveal clear echoes of García’s elegant style.

This particular instrument, dating from around 1920, reflects that influence beautifully. Built with a fine spruce soundboard and cypress back and sides, it captures the lightweight construction and immediacy that define the finest historical flamenco guitars. With a 664 mm scale length and a nut width of 51 mm, it offers traditional dimensions and excellent comfort for authentic flamenco technique.

The sound of the Enrique Sanfeliu 1920 Flamenco Guitar is simply magnificent. Each note resonates with remarkable depth, from its round and precise basses to its crystalline, singing trebles. The midrange adds warmth and richness, ensuring a perfect balance across the registers. Its tone carries a dark, characterful, and almost mystical quality, enriched by more than a century of natural aging. The result is a lyrical, vintage voice that combines sweetness, fire, and expressiveness in equal measure. Despite its delicacy, the guitar surprises with projection and presence, unfolding a wide dynamic range that makes it equally suited for intimate playing and concert performance. It is a guitar full of charm and personality, capable of stirring deep emotions.

The instrument has been carefully restored: several cracks have been repaired, and the French polish has been refreshed to protect and highlight the beauty of the woods. The neck is straight, the action is low, and overall playability is excellent. A fitting case is included for safe storage and transport.

For the discerning guitarist or collector, the Enrique Sanfeliu 1920 Flamenco Guitar represents a rare opportunity to own a piece of Spanish guitar-making history—an instrument that combines heritage, individuality, and a breathtaking vintage sound.
