Johann Georg Stauffer 1810 Romantic Guitar – A Rare Masterpiece from Vienna
This Johann Georg Stauffer 1810 Romantic Guitar is a historically significant and sonically outstanding instrument, representing the peak of Viennese guitar making in the early 19th century. It can be dated to around 1810, as this label was used during Stauffer’s time at the address Im Schulhof 446, where his workshop was located between 1807 and 1813. The label reads simply “Georg Stauffer,” which was typical for this period. Only later did he begin using his full name, “Johann Georg Stauffer,” on his labels.
Johann Georg Stauffer (1778–1853) is celebrated as the most important guitar maker of the Viennese school and one of the great innovators in European lutherie. Working in Vienna, then the cultural capital of Europe, Stauffer crafted instruments for many of the era’s leading musicians. He introduced groundbreaking features such as the adjustable neck, elegant body designs, and refined internal bracing patterns that enhanced projection and tonal clarity. His work inspired generations of luthiers, most notably C. F. Martin, who trained in Stauffer’s workshop before bringing many of his teacher’s ideas to America. As a result, Stauffer’s legacy can be traced directly into the foundation of modern guitar making.
The sound of this Johann Georg Stauffer 1810 Romantic Guitar is nothing short of remarkable. The spruce top, paired with beautifully aged maple back and sides, produces a voice that is warm, intimate, and lyrical. The trebles are crystalline and singing, capable of delivering delicate nuances, while the midrange is smooth and expressive, blending seamlessly with a round, resonant bass. The tonal balance across the registers is exceptional, and the guitar projects with surprising power despite its compact Romantic-era proportions. Its responsiveness allows the player to explore the full dynamic spectrum, from the softest pianissimo to a bright, ringing fortissimo, making it ideal for solo performance, chamber music, and historically informed interpretations.
Playability is excellent, with a scale length of 645 mm, a nut width of 44 mm, and a comfortable action at the 12th fret (3.2 mm bass / 2.7 mm treble). These dimensions provide ease of articulation while maintaining the authentic feel of a true Romantic-era instrument. The ebony fingerboard and original Stauffer-style headstock complete the elegant design.
The guitar remains in very good condition, with careful restorations carried out to preserve structural integrity while keeping originality intact. The French polish has carefully refreshed, highlighting the patina of over 200 years of history. It is accompanied by a handmade hard case for safe storage and transport.
For collectors, performers, and enthusiasts alike, the Johann Georg Stauffer 1810 Romantic Guitar represents a rare opportunity to own not just an instrument, but a piece of guitar-making history—an exceptional blend of innovation, heritage, and timeless sound.
