Richard Jacob Weissgerber 1929 Torres Classical Guitar – Remarkable Instrument with Powerful Sound

This exquisite Torres-style guitar, crafted by Richard Jacob Weissgerber in 1929, is incredibly lightweight yet delivers an impressively powerful sound. Weissgerber, born into a guitar-making family in Markneukirchen, Germany, in 1877, is celebrated for his innovative contributions to guitar design. After training as a zither maker and apprenticing under esteemed guitar maker Wilhelm Voigt, he established his own workshop in 1905. His guitars quickly gained a strong following among professional musicians, thanks to their unique designs, meticulous craftsmanship, and high-quality materials.

Weissgerber’s instruments are renowned for their exceptional tonal qualities. This particular guitar features light fan braces, a scale length of 640 mm, and a nut width of 51 mm. The top is crafted from fine spruce, while the back and sides are made of beautiful rosewood, making it a rare and special instrument.

The sound produced by this Richard Jacob Weissgerber 1929 Torres classical guitar is bold and resonant, characterized by a rich, vintage tone that is both loud and responsive to the player’s touch. It exhibits a remarkable clarity and separation of notes, allowing for intricate fingerstyle playing and expressive dynamics. The harmonious blend of tones creates a captivating auditory experience, making it an ideal choice for performing classical repertoire by composers such as Tarrega, Llobet, Sor, Giuliani and Mertz.

This Richard Jacob Weissgerber 1929 Torres classical guitar is in good condition for its age, the guitar has only some small, professionally repaired cracks all around the guitar body. It has wear from play and use and some scrathes on the side. It is ready for both studio recording and concert performances, and it comes with a newer guitar case.

The guitar has the number 29 / 1/1 on the bar visible through the sound hole. It can therefore be dated to 1929. In 2017, the guitar was presented to the Weissgerber expert Christoph Hanusch for appraisal. He included the guitar in his Weissgerber catalogue.
His book also features a very similar Torres model from 1929.

Weissgerber’s legacy as a master luthier is reflected in this guitar, which showcases his dedication to craftsmanship and sound quality, solidifying his place in the history of guitar making.
